When novice drivers approach us, who are nervous or reluctant to drive, the first thing we do is to talk to them about their concerns. For most its the unknown that really bothers them. Internal questions such as “what if I can’t do it?” swirl in their minds and almost block their ability to move forward.
In our experience, what most nervous drivers need is the right information, presented in the right way and at the right time. This softly, softly approach is what all of our driving instructors take with nervous drivers.
Firstly for nervous drivers, we talk through how a car works, how to use the brake, accelerator and clutch, and then we move onto how to drive safely on the road. Our job is to teach in a reassuring way to ensure that each student has a full understanding of what they’re about to do.
We also use dual controlled vehicles. If a novice driver forgets what do do, the car is always under our control and students are never put in dangerous situations. We find that using a dual control vehicle always puts nervous students at ease.
